Building Immunity
September 22nd…….Marks the official inception of the Autumnal Equinox. (also known as) Fall ....
Yippie! Fall is here! !! With the fall season comes cold season, flu season, and allergy season…. and on top of all of that we are still dealing with Covid season. But, have no fear, there are a variety of ways to combat these biological pathogens through natural defenses: food immunity.
In today’s blog, we will explore a few pathogens and natural ways to combat them. I am a proponent for homeopathy and holistic medicine instead of the traditional Western or allopathic conventional medicine. Let’s take a look at some common pathogens.
Pathogens: a bacterium, virus or other microorganism that can cause disease
Some common diseases caused by pathogens:
· Common cold
· Flu
· Meningitis
· Chicken pox/Shingles
· Measles
· Viral gastroenteritis also norovirus, rotavirus
What is homeopathy?
According to WebMD, Homeopathy is defined as a medical system based on the belief that body can cure itself. This can be achieved through the use of natural substances such as herbs, plants and minerals. Homeopathy is used to treat a variety of health illnesses including, allergies, migraines and depression. Please note, that homeopathic medicine should not take the place of life saving treatments used for cancer, asthma or heart disease. Always consult a doctor for any type of treatment whether it’s natural or traditional medicine. It has often been stated that medical professionals here in the United States cannot legally use the term “cure” when referring to treatments for patients. This is due to the fact that commonly prescribed drugs only treat symptoms and not the actually disease or problem.
You may take a prescription for a condition or disease that you may have. Perhaps it’s a life threatening one. I can relate because I know many people who have diabetes. I know someone with Crohn’s Disease. My son has epilepsy. I get it. I empathize with you and realize no homeopathic can magically cure or make a disease disappear. But I am talking about prevention. I am talking about proactivity. I am of the school of thought that the mind controls everything: even one’s ability to heal and improve their health.
All we have is today. So today I am going to share with you what I know and what I am doing to prevent what I can with what I have: knowledge, tools and intent. Many of the foods that are healthy for us will prevent some cancers, diseases and viruses including the common cold.
According the National Institutes of Health, “antioxidants are substances that protect cells from the damage caused by free radicals (or unstable molecules caused by the oxidation of process). Free radicals are the cause of cancers, stroke, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and other diseases of aging”.
Antioxidants such as green tea, beta carotene, lycopene, Vitamins A, C & E can provide the level of antioxidant support that your body needs. Antioxidants also keep the immune system strong. This is what we need especially going into the flu season in the midst of C-19 and cold weather.
How can I obtain antioxidants?
Through plant foods and fruits such as tomatoes (lycopene), strawberries, bell peppers and broccoli. All contain Vitamin C.
Here are a few more ways to obtain antioxidants:
Vitamin E is contained in almonds, avocados and olive oil.
Beta-carotene creates vitamin A, important for vision and bone health. Good sources are carrots, sweet potatoes, kale, chard and papayas.
Lycopene is found in red fruits and vegetables like tomatoes, papaya and watermelon.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in dark green leafy veggies like spinach, kale, collard greens and broccoli and may help slow the progress of age-related macular degeneration in the eyes.
Anthocyanins are found in blue and purple foods like blueberries, raspberries, plums, pomegranates, eggplant, and red cabbage
